The design of this bookcase was inspired by the works of Thomas Elfe, a Charleston cabinet maker during the period of 1740 until his death in 1775.

The crown molding details, the feet and base moldings are all taken directly from his works. The proportions of the cabinet are of the Ionic order as described by Thomas Chippendale in his book, "The Gentleman & Cabinet-Maker's Director".

The glass used in the doors dates from about 1890 to 1910. The drawer knobs are hand-turned rosewood. All construction methods and joinery are period correct.
